Büdingen has a walled historic town centre built in the Middle Ages. The fortification, moat and towers have been completely conserved and the castle is still the residence of Prince of Ysenburg and Büdingen. Fulda (approx. driving time: 75 minutes, 90 km) A beautiful baroque town with an interesting historic town center. Rothenburg ob der Tauber (approx. driving time: 2 hours, 200 km) The romantic town of Rothenburg is one of the biggest walled cities in Germany built in the 970s. The fortification is completely conserved. Rüdesheim (approx. driving time: 90 minutes, 100 km) When visiting Rüdesheim a walk trough the "Drosselgasse" is a must. The "Drosselgasse" is a very narrow lane with a lot of ingenious and cosy wine bars and restaurants on both sides. The world-famous brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born on 4 January 1785 and 24 February 1786 respectively at Hanau and spent their childhood years there. The Brueder-Grimm-Monument which was unveiled on the market square in 1896 is one of the landmarks of the city.
Skyline (Frankfurt/M.)
80 scyscrapers are towering above the city of Frankfurt. The skyline of bank and office buildings is a symbol for the dynamics of the city. The Commerzbank Tower with almost 3000 metres is holding the present height record among office buildings in Europe. The "Maintower" offers its visitors a panorama terrace at 200 metres. Alte Oper (Frankfurt/M.), The Old Opera House Each night in the Large Room, which is famous for its superb accoustics, as well as in the Mozart Room of the Old Opera there is a wide range of concerts with international ensembles and solists: symphony and chamber concerts, song nights, old and modern music, but also jazz, rock and pop, light entertainment and stand-up comedy. The Opera was built between 1873 and 1880 and resurrected and restored – after it fell victim to the bombs in World War II – in the years 1976 to 1981. A café inside invites you to take a coffee break in style.
Frankfurt Stock Exchange
Frankfurt is the leading German stock exchange. After showing your ID-card you can watch the trading in the "Old Stock Exchange" from a visitors' gallery. For reasons of security you have to call at least 24 hrs in advance to register.
German Film Museum (Frankfurt/M.)
How does a film work? You will find the answers to questions about the "illusion of movement" and the "illusion of reality" in the permanent exhibitions of the first film museum of the world. The movie theatre is the core of the house. Its offer ranges from retrospectives, documentary and avantguarde films, silent movies with organ or piano music, over portraits of directors and actors or portraits of countries up to film premieres and festivals.
Zoo Frankfurt
The Frankfurt Zoo has outstanding special features like the exotics' house, the bird halls and the Grzimek house. Recently, attractive new theme houses have been built. Since 2001 the lions and tigers have been prowling through an almost authentic environment in the cat jungle.
